Ethnic
Fabrics - Sanganeri Prints |
This
art form developed at the end of the 17th century resulting
from the war and constant invasions of Marathas by emporer
Aurangzeb compelling many craftsmen from Gujrat to settle
in sanganer. The 'Syahi Begar' black and red designs on
gossamer white cloth for the fact that the craftsman prints
the black area of the design using the Syahi (ink) pinting
paste and later on the begar paste, a mordant used for
red is then applied using a 'Datta' block to fill in the
'Rekh' (the outlining block) and the fabric is dried for
a week. |
In
Calico printing, the outlines are first printed, and then
the color is filled in. Bold patterns and colors are popular.
They are printed repeatedly in diagonal rows. Doo Rookhi
printing is also famous here. In this technique, artists
print on both sides of the cloth. Sanganeri prints are
famous for their delicate floral sprigs. |
A
critical component of block printing is block carving
and it is an art form in itself. Two kinds of blocks-wood
and metal are made in unique ways and have unique purposes. |
